Rauwolfia serpentina is a glabrous herb or shrub of about 1–2 ft in height , belonging to the family Apocynaceae. Leaves are in whorl of three, opposite, ecliptic-lance shaped, light green to dark green in color. Flowers are violet to white in color. Fruits are drupes, pea-sized, purple-black when ripe. Roots are tuberous with a cork of pale brown in color. It is known to have sedative and hypnotic properties. Traditionally it has been used for the treatment of snake bite, insect stings, hypertension, insomnia, psychological disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, wounds, fever and schizophrenia.
